Creative hub in Hamburg's
Reiherstieg district since 2013

Solidary, self-organized and located in the Veringhöfe, the Atelierhaus not only creates affordable workspace for artists, but also offers a popular meeting point for the Reiherstieg district: exhibition spaces, workshop opportunities or the neighbouring Kaffeeliebe invite you to help create or sit together in a cosy atmosphere. The aim is to bring art and culture to life.

Free space in the studio house
Our space allocation working group is responsible for allocating free studios in the Atelierhaus 23. It consists of association members from various artistic fields and selects applicants on behalf of our association Veringhöfe e.V..
If you are interested and studios are available, we would be happy to invite you to view them! You can read about the criteria we use to select new members in our user questionnaire.
To apply for a room at Atelierhaus 23, please send us the completed user questionnaire by e-mail.

From asbestos factory to artists' house
The Veringhöfe site, where Atelierhaus 23 is located, was initially the production site of an asbestos and rubber factory from 1913 - under the Nazi regime, Merkel KG, which was based here, also benefited significantly from forced labor. The history workshop of the Honigfabrik was instrumental in bringing the site to light. Today, a memorial plaque on the south wall of the studio building commemorates this part of history.
After the end of the war and the storm surge catastrophe, several rebuilds took place and the production facilities were finally relocated in the 1970s. In the years that followed, all kinds of things were built on the former production site: Driving school, Turkish wedding hall, Russian club and even a car repair shop.

In 2008, the city of Hamburg finally bought the site, which had fallen into disrepair in the meantime. In 2010, the Veringhöfe became part of the “Räume für die Kunst” program as part of the International Building Exhibition (IBA), which aimed to anchor long-term artistic and creative structures in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg.
The first artists moved into Atelierhaus 23 in 2013 following the founding of the non-profit Verein zur Förderung von Kunst und Kultur e.V. and the association Veringhöfe e.V. in 2010 - the former as a funding instrument, the latter for the tenants' self-organisation.

Solidary and self-organised - our structures
Atelierhaus23 is made up of two association structures. One is the non-profit Verein zur Förderung von Kunst und Kultur e.V., which mainly functions as a funding instrument. On the other hand, there is the association Veringhöfe e.V., which mainly serves the self-organisation of the tenants.
